In The News: Dubai will introduce driverless vehicles before the end of 2022

One small step for man, one huge step towards realising Dubai’s Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy which “aims to transform 25% of total mobility journeys in Dubai into journeys on various self-driving transport modes by 2030,” according to HE Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors.

Approved by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, the RTA announced the start of trials and preparations of digital maps for Cruise autonomous vehicles which are expected to be in place by the end of 2022. They will be new vehicles dedicated to shared driverless transport, In 2023, residents can expect to see a limited number of Cruise autonomous vehicles deployed, with a plan to increase the number of deployed vehicles gradually to reach 4000 vehicles by 2030.

They are all sustainable, electric vehicles and will serve a considerable new database including senior citizens and people of determination. With 90% of traffic accidents caused by human error, autonomous cars are expected to eventually be a safer way to travel.

Dubai will be the first global platform for launching Cruise Origin Cars and Dubai will also be the first city to operate these vehicles outside of the US. The move enhances Dubai’s pioneering role in self-driving transport, according to the RTA report.
