How Dubai is emerging as a key leader in the international sustainability movement

Sustainability is no longer just a buzz word being used to gain recognition. The world today is demanding concrete actions, and sustainability has evolved into a global movement in the right direction.

Standing at the fore front of this movement is the young but dynamic city of Dubai.

When you think sustainability, one of the first sectors that should come into your mind is transport. Over time, The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) have implemented some key changes in their policies. As a result, the world is now witnessing the massive potential that stems from blending technology with eco-consciousness.

So far, the RTA has recorded savings of AED 85 Million through the smart execution of 36 different initiatives.

These smart initiatives have helped conserve 68 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, 55 million gallons of water, 21 million litres of gasoline, and 1.8 million litres of diesel. This is no small feat, especially for a city that is known for being active day and night.

The RTA also published it’s 7th Sustainability Report 2021, making it the first public transport entity to achieve concrete, data-oriented achievements over the past five years (2017-2021). The report was in line with the International Standard on Assurance Engagements (ISAE 3000) using DNV GL VeriSustain protocols.

The findings from this report highlight the RTA’s ambition to establish itself as ‘The world leader in seamless and sustainable mobility’, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations.

The report establishes the RTA’s role as a key player in the future of sustainable transport. There are three main points they observe- foreseeing the future, adopting strategic projects that support the economy, and contributing to the wellbeing and happiness of Dubai’s residents and visitors.

One of the RTA’s key missions have been to achieve zero-emission from public transport means by 2050. This has allowed them to become the first government entity in the MENA region to have developed a comprehensive roadmap of public transport and it’s infrastructure.

These investments in public transport have been a welcome move. They have contributed to the fast recovery of the public transport sector, restoring services to pre-pandemic levels.
