Nissan has recalled a few of its SUVs and Pickup trucks as the emblem on the steering wheel is found to be a safety hazard. Yes, you heard it right. Nissan’s recall was issued after the NHTSA determined that the Nissan badges on the steering wheel would come off in the event of airbag deployment and this could injure the driver of the car.
When an automotive OEM issues a recall for one of its cars, it turns out to be an expensive affair, one that isn’t really good for brand image. However, if looked at from the other perspective, one would find that the brand is concerned about the well-being of its customers and this is especially true if the recall has been issued for cars that have already been on the road for a long time.
In this case, the cars affected by the recall are the Nissan Titan, Nissan Frontier, Nissan Pathfinder, Nissan X-Terra, and Nissan Armada manufactured between 2008 and 2011. It also includes the Nissan Quest produced between 2008 and 2009.
While most automotive recalls are usually issued for mechanical components that aren’t functioning as intended, this recall has been issued for what is considered an aesthetic component.
The badge on the steering wheel is usually an identifier of the manufacturer of a particular car. However, in this case, it has turned out to be the cause of a massive recall that has affected 404,690 vehicles.
The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), is the prime road safety agency in the USA. Tests performed by this organisation have now found that the emblems on the steering wheels in the aforementioned models develop cracks over time and detach from the steering wheel in the event of the airbag’s deployment.
In the event of a crash, a car’s airbags have to be deployed within milliseconds, and this requires the airbags to be inflated with immense velocity. Depending on the speed of the car, an airbag deployment takes place with a velocity of between 160km/h to 320km/h!
In the case of the Nissan cars now recalled, this immense velocity turns the hardened Nissan emblem into a projectile headed straight for the driver’s face. Obviously, this would result in more injury and this is exactly why there is now a recall.
The report by the NHTSA only addresses the North American market and the cars manufactured and/or sold in North America. However, the Nissan Pathfinder, X-Terra, Frontier, Navara, and Titan are all found on the roads in the UAE. Some of them were imported from America by individuals and some of them were sold by Nissan UAE, but were manufactured in the USA.
As a result, these cars should ideally be recalled by Nissan in the UAE too. However, it remains to be seen if Nissan UAE will actually end up doing that. If you’re interested in buying any of these capable SUVs and Pickup trucks, you can look at over 1,200 used Nissan cars in the UAE.
