The step-by-step guide to purchasing your first car in Dubai

You’ve just landed in Dubai and you’ve managed to find a job, a place to live, and have received your Emirates ID. You’re on easy street! Next step? It’s time to buy a car. This article will help you ease through the process, so you can be cruising down Sheikh Zayed Road in no time.

Alternatively, if you’ve finally found the courage (or money!) to jump from the metro/taxi life into becoming a vehicle owner in Dubai, we list everything you need to know to make purchasing your first car in Dubai a piece of cake.

Buying a car for the first time in Dubai can be a minefield, but DubiCars has listed out the steps you should take to make the process super smooth.

  1. Get your finances right. Are you eligible for a bank loan? Understand the initial requirements and look closely at the long-term T&Cs. If a bank loan is not an option, look at alternative ways to finance it. Have you saved up enough? Or can you borrow??
  2. If you’re selling your current car to finance a new one, sell it privately to get the highest price possible. Alternatively, you can sell it to a dealership to have a smoother transfer of paperwork. Irrespective of whether you are buying a new or a used car, the dealership is bound to have a trade-in option where you can give away your older car and drive away the new one.
  3. Choosing a car:
    – Figure out your purpose for owning a car. Do you need a car that fits your family? Do you want to go on adventures? Do you want a compact city car? Or, are you looking for a sports car?
    – Establish what kind of fuel type fits your lifestyle: Petrol, diesel, and electric are the available options and will affect your operating costs differently.
  4. Make sure you have all the documents in place to be eligible to buy a car
    – UAE residence visa
    – Emirates ID
    – Passport copy
    – Car insurance agreement copy
    – Previous registration card for the vehicle
    – Valid Dubai driving license
    – Inspection certificate obtained from an authorised Vehicle Testing Centre (more details below)
  5. (The fun part!) Search for cars on DubiCars
  6. Shortlist your top 3 cars. You can even save your favourite cars on DubiCars, which can help you select and narrow down your top contenders!
  7. From your shortlist, look for similar cars that are 3 years older and make a note of how much they are selling for. This will help you determine the depreciation of the vehicle.
  8. Contact the owner, book an inspection slot & test drive the car. Make sure to ask for the car’s full service history to know exactly what you are getting.
  9. Are you buying from a private seller or a dealer?
    – Buying from a private seller is usually the cheapest route, but it’s also riskier, as the car might have issues you don’t spot on purchase. Once the papers are signed, you make your payment and the car is yours, along with all the issues, and there’s no going back.
    – Dealerships can be pricier, but might save you money in the long run. You can arrange a service check via the dealership and sometimes a warranty, meaning your purchase is secured for an agreed time. Also, dealerships will help you with registration (more details below)
  10. Car insurance is mandatory in the UAE and there are multiple options available between basic and comprehensive, based on your budget. Shop around to make sure you get the best price.
  11. Vehicle inspection. A vehicle must be checked to ensure it’s roadworthy in order to renew ownership, registration or to transfer its ownership. Documents required:
    – Vehicle Clearance Certificate (VCC)
    – Possession certificate
    – Transfer certificate from another emirate if applicable
  12. Ownership transfer: You and the previous owner need to visit the RTA licensing centres, or do it online via the RTA. Fill in an application form and present the registration card for the car, an insurance certificate, and any information from a previous finance company saying there is no outstanding debt along with the car’s license plates.
  13. Registration: Your car must be registered before you can drive it. There are various centres around Dubai you can visit, and you must bring the following documents to support your file.
  • Registration card
  • Insurance certificate
  • Purchase agreement
  • Cash for registration
  • Original Emirates ID
  • Copy of Passport
  • Vehicle license

Beep beep, you’re on your way! There you have the low-down on purchasing your first car in Dubai. And a final word of warning: Make sure you have all the necessary documents before you visit a centre for registration, as you can waste a lot of time queuing up and if you’re missing a vital form, you’ll be sent home, and the queuing up begins all over again.
