That alone makes this very exclusive indeed. Read on to know more about this Mercedes-AMG GT-R.

Rich AMG Heritage

If you’re into cars, there’s no way you haven’t heard of AMG. It is the holy grail of sports cars and performance car tuning at the factory level. It was started by Hans Werner Aufrecht & Erhard Melcher way back in 1967 when they began tuning Mercedes-Benz cars. The name AMG was derived from the founders’ names Aufrecht, Melcher, and Großaspach (Aufrecht’s birth town).

Over the years, the AMG brand grew in popularity, so much so that performance connoisseurs in Germany bought a Mercedes-Benz car and then drove straight to AMG to get the car tuned to go faster. Mercedes-Benz couldn’t help but notice and in 1993, a contract was signed allowing AMG cars to be sold at Mercedes-Benz dealerships. In 1999, Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz acquired a 51 percent stake in AMG and the rest is history. Since then, AMG has been the high-performance division of Mercedes-Benz and it produces some of the most emotion-inducing cars in the world.

Roots Of The Mercedes-AMG GT-R

Production of the venerable Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG started in 2010. It was the first Mercedes-branded car developed entirely by AMG. This sports car had a successful production run until 2015 and then came the time for its successor to take the reigns. This is where the AMG GT comes into the picture.

It was first launched in 2014 and production began the same year as well. Multiple versions of the AMG GT were launched over the years. The high-performance versions were usually racetrack-focused while the standard models were all a little more comfortable for road use. However, the AMG GT-R was the one model that brought both worlds together. It was comfortable enough for everyday use on the road while still powerful and capable enough to take on the track-focused models.

Aggressive Design & Styling

Decked in this brilliant shade called ‘Green Hell Magno’, the Mercedes-AMG GT-R is a car that is sure to grab eyeballs. You can look at it from any possible angle and still feel it is very aggressive.

Since it is the fastest road-going and road-focused variant of the AMG GT, the good folks at AMG made a few changes to the bodywork. It came with several changes to the aero elements. Up front are the new air intakes, and new vertical slats in the grille. The front splitter is also different compared to the standard model.

It rides on 21-inch wheels and has a massive vent in the fender on the sides. At the rear is a massive manually-adjustable wing and a nice contoured bumper. It even gets a more aggressive diffuser design that seems to have taken inspiration from the track-focused variants.

Sporty, Yet Classy Interior

When it comes to a sports car, one mustn’t expect too much. These are machines made to deliver high performance and luxury is often out of the equation. However, the Mercedes-AMG GT-R doesn’t disappoint.

Alcantara, black leather, silver knobs, and chrome bezels are what define the interior. Neither is it isn’t too opulent nor is it too basic. It has just the right amount of sportiness and class. The two large analogue gauges look fantastic. The suspension, traction control, transmission responsiveness, and other functions can be controlled via buttons and knobs on the centre console. The seats aren’t too comfortable, but they sure are very sporty.

Large Engine & Impressive Performance

This is the fastest road-going and road-focused variant of the AMG GT, and naturally, the engine plays a vital role in bringing this distinction to it. It has been tuned up to produce 577hp at 6,250rpm and a whopping 700Nm at just 5,500rpm. The dash from 0-100km/h takes just 3.6 seconds and it will go on to touch a top speed of around 316km/h. It has a throaty exhaust note and provides a fantastic driving experience.

Though the performance on offer is raw, it can be tamed in most cases. However, Mercedes-AMG wants its users to have fun and this is very evident with the distinct placement of the traction control knob. One can turn the knob to adjust just how much interference is needed from the TC system. If you’re interested in maintaining maximum traction, leave it at the highest setting. However, if you want to have some slipping and sliding action, you can progressively turn it down.

The Mercedes-AMG GT-R is one sports car that is sure to impress. Whether it’s the colour, the throaty exhaust noise, or the racetrack credentials, the AMG GT-R surely won’t leave you wanting. Given that it is the only ‘new’ AMG GT-R in the UAE, this particular sports car offers exclusivity too.
