Mercedes-Benz & Cisco have partnered to offer Webex in their cars as a part of an initiative to broaden the horizons of Hybrid work patterns. The announcement was made at the ongoing Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain and it brings Cisco’s Webex online meeting app to Mercedes-Benz cars.
The first car to come with the added feature will be the next-generation Mercedes-Benz E-Class which is expected to be showcased within 2-3 months. The vehicle will be launched later this year as a 2024 model. The E-Class is also one of the best-selling models for Mercedes-Benz in the UAE car market and hence we expect the German marque to also launch the new car in the UAE as soon as it goes on sale in other International markets.
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class will feature a new design and styling, a host of new features, and a longer list of tech. As aforementioned, Webex will come pre-installed on the new E-Class, enabling its buyers to attend important work meetings while on the move. One might think it is unsafe and to an extent, it is.
However, Mercedes-Benz makes some of the safest cars in the world, and safety does come first for the German brand. Safe driving also means getting rid of all the distractions and as a result, users of Webex in Mercedes-Benz cars won’t be able to use the video feature of the app while the car is in motion.
You can attend meetings via the voice-only route. Other features of Webex, including video, AI transcription, animations, emojis, content sharing, etc, become available only once the car is parked. Webex can be run on a cellular connection or via the car’s onboard Wifi connectivity.
This certainly is a very convenient and thoughtful feature to have in a car. However, its purpose being achieved seems a bit distant for now. The whole purpose of having meeting apps in a car is for the user to be connected irrespective of whether they are in the office, at home, or on the move. If users need to be in a meeting with the video turned on, they would have to park the car, which defeats the whole purpose.
In addition, one also needs to consider the fact that most buyers of cars like the Mercedes-Benz E-Class prefer being driven around while they spend time in the back seat of the car, at least during work days. The unavailability of the video option despite the fact that they are being chauffeur-driven will certainly be viewed as a disadvantage.
Cisco’s Webex for Automobiles initiative in 2022 announced a collaboration with Ford to integrate Webex with Ford’s SYNC3 connectivity suite. The company is also looking at partnerships with other OEMs to bring Webex to more cars.
While Webex will debut in the new E-Class, we expect the app to be made available in other upcoming Mercedes-Benz cars as well. If you are looking for Mercedes-Benz cars in the UAE, here are the used Mercedes-Benz cars in the UAE, and new Mercedes-Benz cars in the UAE.
